Should I go to prom?
The story
Prom is May 2nd and I still havent bought a ticket. Everyone at my school is acting like it's the biggest night of the year and I honestly can't decide if it's worth it.
I'm a junior and I've never been to a formal dance, not even homecoming, because crowds and dressing up are not my thing. Tickets are 85 dollars, plus a dress, plus shoes, plus the pictures, plus the after party people keep talking about. My mom said she would help with the dress but I know money is tight right now and I don't want to spend 300 dollars on a night I might spend standing against a wall.
The real reason I keep going back and forth is my crush. We've had chem together since September and we talk almost every day. He laughs at my dumb jokes, he saved me a seat when I came back from being sick for a week, and two of my friends swear he likes me back. But he hasn't said a word about prom, and I'm not brave enough to ask if he's going. If I go and he's there, maybe something finally happens. If I go and he's not, I'm alone in a dress I can't really afford, watching couples slow dance to songs I don't even like.
Going with my friends is an option, but most of them have dates now and I don't want to be the extra person in the group, the one who holds everyones purse during the slow songs. Going alone sounds scary. I've read that alot of people go to prom alone and have a great time, but those people are probably not shy like me. I can barely order at a restaurant without rehearsing it in my head first.
Part of me says skip it, save the money and avoid the whole thing. I could hang out with my cousin, watch a movie and pretend it's a normal Saturday. The other part says this is one of those nights you only get once, and I'll regret it at 25 when I'm scrolling through everyone's pictures and I'm not in any of them. My older sister went to her prom and still talks about it like it was yesterday. My brother skipped his and says he doesn't care, but he definately gets quiet when it comes up.
So, should I go to prom? Is prom actually worth it when you're going without a date, maybe completely alone, and you've never done anything like it before? And would it be weird to just ask him if he's going, or is that to obvious? I have about two weeks to decide and I keep changing my mind every single day.

just ask him if hes going. worst case he says no and u still have ur answer lol
I know, I know. Easier said than done when he sits right next to me though.
I went to my prom alone in 2004 because the guy I liked asked someone else. I almost didn't go. I ended up dancing with people I barely knew and I still have the photos on my fridge. The crush part faded within a year, the night didn't. Buy the ticket.
85 bucks is nothing compared to wondering about it for years. Go.
proms kinda overrated 😆 i skipped mine, went to the movies with two friends, zero regrets
zero regrets or zero pictures to post 😏
is there anyone else in your friend group without a date? go as a pair, then your not the extra person, your the fun table
Mom of a senior here. My daughter said the exact same thing last year, no date, didn't want to spend the money. She went with two friends and called me at midnight to say it was the best night of her year. The dress came from a thrift store and nobody could tell. Just go.
ok update. I asked him. He's going with his friends. I bought the ticket 🙃
so did you go?? don't leave us hanging
I went. We danced twice. That's all I'm saying 😂
found this while deciding about my own prom next year. the update made my night, thank you
