Why am i emotional?

The story

Lately, I've noticed an unsettling pattern in my professional demeanor. Recently, during a work meeting, I found myself tearing up after receiving what was intended as constructive criticism. This is not typical behavior for me; I am generally composed and receptive to feedback. The emotional outburst left me questioning the root cause of this unpredictable reaction more intensely than ever before. Is it merely stress accumulation or an underlying issue yet unknown? Are external pressures impacting my ability to maintain composure when faced with evaluative comments? Frankly, this new sensitivity is disruptive and perplexing.

"Why am I reacting like this?!" remains the question that echoes in my thoughts incessantly. Could it be linked to personal matters bleeding into my professional life? Am I subconsciously viewing criticism as a reflection of my self-worth rather than an opportunity for growth? Or perhaps, it's related to the cumulative effects of heightened workplace expectations commonly referred to as 'scope creep'? These are considerations that weigh heavily on me; and while emotions undeniably play a role in interpersonal dynamics, their unpredictability can be professionally damaging...especially when unwarranted tears make appearances, much to everyone's awkward surprise.

"Hang in there" indeed!

it's no big deal really

I wish it felt that simple. It just nags at me, you know? Like something's off balance and I can't put my finger on it.

i get why you're feeling this way but maybe take a step back and consider if there might be other factors contributing to your reactions at work. sometimes stress or personal issues can sneak up on us without realizing until we're faced with situations like yours.

I've had moments where I've been caught off guard by unexpected emotions too. It might be worth considering how your environment could be affecting you as well. On one hand, everyone has moments of vulnerability; yet on the other hand, understanding these triggers is crucial for managing them better.

"Everyone has moments", true... Thank you!

man, that sounds really tough but you're definitely not alone in feeling this way; i actually went through something sorta similar last year when work stress was at its peak, and it hit me out of the blue too.

sounds like you're really digging deep into this, but maybe you're overthinking it a bit. everyone has off days... even the most unflappable person can crack under pressure once in a while, right? i mean, you gotta remember that work stress or personal stuff can definitely take its toll without us even realizing it. once at a job interview, i almost teared up too just because i was so damn overwhelmed with everything going on in my life. try not to beat yourself up about it; nobody's perfect and it's not the end of your career if you show some emotion sometimes!!!

GreatPurpleFireTergiversateInCharleroiWithHope 6d ago

Yo, I've been there. It's like you're running on fumes sometimes and then BAM! Someone's feedback just tips the scales. Maybe it's a sign you need a break or just some time to figure out what’s really going on inside your head. Trust me, when I got overwhelmed with "constructive criticism," taking a step back helped more than trying to power through. It could also be we're hitting some kind of emotional burnout lol. Remember "The important thing is not to stop questioning."

CuriousBrownIcePlantInMumbaiWithEmpathy 6d ago

Wow, sounds like you're having a bit of a meltdown over some feedback. Honestly, who hasn't had a moment where criticism feels like the world's coming to an end? Maybe take a chill pill and look at it this way: getting worked up could just mean you actually give a damn about your job! 💪 It ain't rare for personal dramas to sneak into the office arena, so maybe time to do some soul-searching or get your work-life boundaries in check;

Funny thing is, not too long ago, I accidentally snapped at an email alert on my computer screen. Instantly, I thought I was losing control of my emotions too. It feels strange when minor things start to have a big impact like this. Maybe you have a point: it could be a sign of how much the job matters to me and that personal stuff is definitely leaking in...

SpunkySkyBlueWoodIridescenceInEvoraWithLoneliness 6d ago

same thing happened 2 me last week lol ur not alone

SizzlingCrimsonWoodKaleInSantiagoWithAnxiety 5d ago

maybe it's just temporary?

Author 5d ago

I really hope it's just temporary, but it's been going on for a while now. It feels like more than a passing phase. It's exhausting trying to figure it out when I already have so much on my plate.

VibrantPeriwinkleWaterDusterInAccraWithEnvy 5d ago

it's really relatable to feel overwhelmed in those situations. sometimes our brains just latch onto stressors and magnify them even when we're usually good at handling it. maybe there's a lot going on behind the scenes, kind of like those hidden layers everyone talks about. you've mentioned 'scope creep', which is real! that constant shift can make anyone feel off-balance; it's not just you. have you had any downtime recently? your mind might be craving a little mental reset if things have been piling up..; give yourself some grace and see how things unfold!

EffervescentMulberryFireScannerInQuitoWithShame 5d ago

I totally understand! This happens to me whenever someone points out mistakes in my reports.

cant believe u cried over that

SpunkyChartreuseIcePaintInVeniceWithAnger 4d ago

eh, it sounds like you're overanalyzing a bit; sometimes it's just life catching up with you. we've all been through times when things pile on without us noticing. maybe it’s worth checking in on stuff outside work too: sleep, food, exercise... yeah? they can really mess with your emotions even if you think you're fine. and who knows, could be a sign to give yourself a break before anything bigger happens ✌️

Author 17h ago

Yeah, that might be it. Maybe I am overanalyzing. I guess checking in on the basics could help. Thanks for the reality check, maybe it's time to take a breather.

RadiatingLemonLightDeskInRomeWithSympathy 3d ago

have you asked colleagues about similar experiences?

Author 3d ago

I haven't, to be honest. Maybe I should bring it up with someone I trust at work and see if they have similar feelings. It might help put things into perspective.

:) i once laughed during a review bcz i was so nervous LOL

GreatTanWaterGossamerInSantiagoWithRegret 2d ago

It's odd that you'd react this way at work if it hasn't been a problem before. Maybe there's something else going on that you're not aware of yet; try looking into other areas of your life for clues about why this bothers you so much now compared to previously.
