your feelings are valid
The story
I recently had an experience that's been on my mind, and I just need to vent about it. During a meeting at work, I decided to share some ideas that I thought could really help our team move forward. Given the nature of our project, it's kind of essential for everyone to pitch in with their thoughts. But after I spoke up, there was this awkward silence that followed. It felt like my suggestions were just brushed aside. I guess that’s what happens in groups where hierarchy plays a big role, but it still left me feeling uneasy.
What really gets to me is not just having my ideas ignored but also the nagging doubt about whether they were even worth sharing. In our field, feedback is crucial, and while I know criticism can be helpful, it’s tough to tell the difference between constructive feedback and a flat-out no. I get that not every idea will be celebrated, but being disregarded makes you second-guess your contributions.
I've been stuck in this loop of overthinking since then. Was there something wrong with what I said, or did I just fail to communicate my point? I wonder if this moment of silence was due to factors outside my control or if I need to step up my game.
I know that in any collaborative setting, disagreements and debates happen all the time. Still, a little validation or acknowledgment of effort would go a long way. Feeling overwhelmed by uncertainty isn’t new, and it doesn’t just happen at work.
As I sift through these feelings of disappointment and self-doubt, reassurance feels hard to come by. Do my ideas actually matter to the team, or am I just imagining their significance? These questions keep swirling around in my head.
