Can a narcissist love?
The story
I gotta say, I've been in a really confusing headspace lately. So I just discovered that my partner might be narcissistic or at least show some tendencies like seriously? My friend told me "Oh once a narcissist, always a narcissist" and that they're completely incapable of genuine love and connection!!! Kinda bold right? But here’s the thing: I do see moments where my partner actually seems to care for real. We're talking about those rare but precious little sparkles of affection that almost fool you into thinking there's something deeper inside them. 💔 Like last week when they surprised me with dinner after knowing I had a rough day. Was that pure manipulation or actual affection? Dammit, this whole thing just messes with my perception...
So what's true? Are they doomed to only care about themselves??? I'm stuck wondering if I'm in la-la land, holding on to illusions... 🙄 It sucks because I feel like I'm being pulled between giving this person the benefit of the doubt and protecting myself from becoming an emotional punching bag again... From other people's stories online (yeah yeah, ignore those internet advice warriors), it sounds like living with a full-blown narc is an exhausting nightmare full of gaslighting and constant drama. Still, each time they do something genuinely nice it makes me pause...am I underestimating their capacity for love or am I just reading too much into what could be simple manipulations??? Ugh!!! All in all ain’t wanna ignore these red flags while part of me stupidly hopes people can change even just a bit... Anyone else questioning their sanity dealing with someone who shows two faces?? 😩

Have you thought about seeking professional advice?
Yeah I'd suggest therapy too...
That's a thought, but I'm kinda wary of therapists. What if my partner turns on the charm for them too? Ugh, it's all so draining.
Honestly, from my experience not all narcissists are incapable of showing love or forming connections. It may not always be deep and true for everyone but it's also unfair to categorize them all the same.
omg yes!! had an ex just like that lol
Sounds like you're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea trying to figure out what's real versus what's an act.
Man, I totally feel you on this one. It's like you're caught in some weird emotional tug-of-war and it can really drain you; staying alert for manipulation while holding onto the hope that there might be something genuine underneath is such a tricky spot. 🤦♂️ Honestly, I've been in situations where I seriously doubted my own judgment because those little gestures of kindness kept pulling me back in. Maybe it's worth weighing if those sparkles outweigh the times you feel emotionally drained or even hurt... At the end of the day, your peace of mind is so important but it’s so easy to get tangled up hoping for change when they pull an occasional nice move.
Totally feel that tug-of-war... it's wild how those little gestures can mess with our heads! It's like trying to balance on a tightrope. Sometimes I can't even tell if I'm being paranoid or smart about it all.
i felt this hard... dated sum1 like dat b4 was hard lol
honestly, i'd be wary about labeling someone a narcissist just cuz of some tendencies. i mean, everyone can act self-centered now and then, right? but if they're really making you question your sanity or feel like you're on an emotional rollercoaster every day (damn, i'm using that word), maybe it's worth taking a step back; lol, people can change but it takes effort and time...not just a random nice gesture here or there. don't let those little moments blind you to the bigger picture, y'know? balancing between protecting yourself and giving them a chance is tough as hell but trust your gut. been through similar bs myself and found that sometimes stepping away lets you see things clearer 😅
Oh man, it's like you're living in this constant state of whiplash, right? I totally get it because back when I was with someone similar, the unpredictability could drive anyone nuts. One moment they'd do something that felt genuinely heartfelt and the next, bam! You're questioning everything. It's not always black and white too; sometimes they might genuinely care but just have a tough way of showing it due to their own issues. You know what often helped me clear my head? Keeping a journal about specific incidents and how they made me feel without overthinking in the heat of the moment. Later, reading over those entries can offer surprising insights into patterns or connections you may not see day-to-day. You’re definitely not alone in questioning your reality dealing with someone who seems to operate from two different playbooks!
A journal, huh? That's actually a pretty solid idea. Might help me sort through the chaos in my brain right now. Plus, it could be helpful to see if there's any pattern to this whole drama...
man, what a mess you're navigating. so many layers to this stuff. sometimes people can show bits of genuine care even if they've got those narcissistic traits lurking around; maybe they're not fully aware or in denial about their own behavior and who isn't a little messed up inside? but honestly, I'd say keep those eyes wide open; red flags are important to note as there's no harm in being realistic about protecting yourself while hoping for the best. letting your guard down repeatedly is probably not ideal though, right? you know your relationship better than anyone else watching from the sidelines benefits too💡
Totally get you!
sounds like you're in a tough spot...
Yeah, feels like I'm stuck in a weird emotional limbo. It's just so confusing trying to figure out if those nice moments mean anything real. Thanks for understanding the struggle.
