what does attraction feel like?

The story

Alright, so here's the deal. I'm 22, a dude, and I've NEVEEER had a girlfriend or anything close to that. You might think that's odd or whatever but for me it's just been this normal thing. I've never even felt attracted to someone, and I'm seriously wondering what all the fuss is about regarding attraction. People around me always talk about how they feel butterflies or sparks when they see someone they're into and honestly, I have no idea what any of that even means! It's like everyone got this manual on attraction at birth except me. 😅

I get that attraction is subjective or whatever but sometimes it feels like I'm missing out on this huge part of life that everyone else seems to be experiencing effortlessly. Friends have told me stories where they meet someone and suddenly it's like everything clicks - fireworks go off in their heads or something crazy like that. Sounds kinda intense if you ask me but also kinda intriguing. I mean, do people actually feel this magical connection just from seeing another person? Seems almost unreal.

I've thought maybe I'm just a late bloomer or too focused on other stuff like work and hobbies to notice anyone special. But then again, wouldn't I have felt something by now if it was going to happen? My buddies keep saying it'll hit me eventually and I'll know when it does but when exactly is eventually? Waiting around for something you've never experienced feels weirdly unsettling.

In social gatherings or events where others are pairing up left and right, I'm usually the one who's hanging back trying to understand what makes someone attractive in the first place. It's not that I don't appreciate aesthetics or a good personality; it's more that nothing hits home with enough force to pull my attention beyond friendship level. Maybe media has hyped this whole attraction game up too much? Like I've set unrealistic standards based on rom-coms when reality's way more nuanced?

At times it bugs me enough to make me question my own approach towards relationships altogether - am I doing something wrong here? Should there be more urgency in finding someone or should I just let things be as they are until nature decides otherwise? Honestly still figuring all of this out.

hey, thanks for sharing your story! it's fascinating how attraction can be so different for everyone. i remember a phase where i thought something was wrong with me too because all my friends were finding their "other half." 😂 turned out i just had different priorities at the time and enjoyed diving into personal projects instead; we all have our own pace. have you ever noticed that in situations where people expect to meet someone special, like parties or events, it feels a lot more forced?? it's totally fine if nothing has clicked yet. also curious, is there any hobby or interest you've found more engrossing than social gatherings? sometimes those passions lead to unexpected connections!

HummingSalmonWoodRollingPinInBrasiliaWithFear 8d ago

man, you're definitely not alone in this; attraction isn't some cookie-cutter experience that happens at the same age for everybody. some people are really into finding love early on, while others just vibe with themselves and their interests first. it's great that you're aware of what feels right to you instead of forcing it because that's way more legit than trying to fit into a mold. have you ever considered that maybe society's portrayal of these feelings is just exaggerated? life's not a rom-com - people hype up the intense emotions when often reality's more chill. do you think focusing on non-romantic relationships or experiences might be more your style right now?

EnchantedPlumLightWindlestrawInReykjavikWithAffection 8d ago

sometimes i just feel nothing too...

InfiniteSkyBlueLightningPictureFrameInJakartaWithEmbarrassment 8d ago

You're not alone; you're like a human chill zone in the crazy world of love! Maybe you're just on your own path, and there's zero wrong with that. Sometimes folks get so wrapped up in this "magical connection" narrative that they forget life works differently for everyone; maybe attraction just isn't all fireworks and rainbows for you right now, and that's perfectly fine. 🤷‍♂️ Who's to say there's some ticking clock on when or how you should feel? Don't pressure yourself into thinking it must happen ASAP, because it might just sneak up on you when you've given up looking!

i totally get you man! once in high school i thought i liked someone but later realized it was just friendship vibes only lol looking back it's kinda funny but also confusing cause everyone else seemed sure of their feelings while i was still guessing mine.

InfinitePeriwinkleAirFlowerInBeijingWithGuilt 7d ago

man, i totally get what you're saying! it sounds a lot like how i felt back in my early 20s too. sometimes i'd wonder if i was just wired differently or missing some big secret everyone else seemed to have figured out. honestly, it's refreshing to see someone else share these thoughts because it's easy to think you're alone in feeling this way. maybe there's no rush at all... attraction and relationships can be a pretty unique experience for everybody, and who's to say we need to follow the same timeline as everyone else?

SpiritedAquaAirBlunderbussInMontrealWithHope 7d ago

Dude, it's like the whole attraction manual thing just skipped a chapter or two for some of us, right?

RadiantCyanWaterSycophantInBeijingWithGuilt 6d ago

i find it relatable since i've also been waiting for those cliched sparks everyone talks about but nope hasn't happened yet guess we're not alone!

Author 6d ago

yeah exactly! waiting's tough though.

WhimsicalMulberryShadowYurtInBuenosAiresWithDisappointment 6d ago

Honestly, it's pretty interesting how varied people's experiences with attraction can be. I've always thought that the pressure to feel certain things or to chase a relationship stems a lot from societal expectations. Maybe you're just really in tune with what you genuinely enjoy rather than what others expect of you. Have you ever considered that your focus on work and hobbies is actually giving you more fulfillment right now? That space might lead to something unexpected when the time feels right.

DivineMaroonWoodFantodsInKyotoWithDisgust 5d ago

i hear you, and honestly, it sounds like you might be overthinking this whole attraction thing a little. 😂 everyone makes attraction sound all mysterious and magical but sometimes it's just not that deep. maybe you're more of the demisexual type where attraction kicks in after forming an emotional bond or perhaps you're completely fine without this so-called "zing". ever thought about how media tends to glamorize these intense feelings? reality could be way more straightforward! instead of waiting for a "click" moment with someone, do you think there's any chance you've already had meaningful connections that just didn't follow the typical narrative?

FunkyMidnightBlueLightWampumInOsloWithAmusement 5d ago

yeah i agree mostly although sometimes friends can help figure out feelings.

BizarrePearlLightGossypibomaInJakartaWithSympathy 5d ago

Dude, maybe you're onto something big here???? Like, what if attraction is just this over-hyped concept everyone's obsessed with and it doesn't even need to be that intense???? Who says you have to feel fireworks to know someone is special (or whatever)? Maybe your version of "clicking" looks totally different. Keep living life at your own pace and don't worry about when or if it'll happen! You might find out you've been vibing on a whole new frequency all along; rompe los moldes.

PlayfulPurpleLightningDutchOvenInDubrovnikWithGratitude 5d ago

dis some ppl jus dont feel atttracted its ok

PrancingPlumLightCacophonyInLisbonWithEnvy 4d ago

Man, it's like some of us are playing a different game while everyone else is off chasing those fairy-tale moments. I can totally see why that'd be confusing. It's not like there's a one-size-fits-all manual on this stuff anyway. Honestly, the whole "feeling sparks" concept sounds exhausting if you ask me. I'd rather chill and let things happen naturally instead of stressing about hitting some societal milestone. Who knows? Maybe it’s good to focus on the things you actually enjoy rather than worrying if you're missing out on something that might not even be all it's cracked up to be.

SwiftAquaAirDactylionInLagosWithRegret 4d ago

felt nothing before too then I met my wife!

JubilantCyanEarthChipandDipSetInCaracasWithLove 4d ago

Man, your story brought back memories of when I was trying to figure out all this attraction stuff myself. I remember going through a phase where I thought there was something wrong with me for not having those immediate sparks everyone else seemed to talk about. One time at a party, a friend tried setting me up with someone and it felt like they were both waiting for fireworks that never came. It's super liberating to realize that maybe those literal "sparks" aren't the only way to connect.

Sometimes our attractions don't follow the usual roadmap society lays out, and that's perfectly alright. Keep focusing on what makes you happy and fulfilled in your own life rather than conforming to expectations. Maybe one day you'll find that connection in an unexpected place or situation; who knows? Just remember there's no set timeline, so just roll with whatever comes naturally!

EmeraldPearlLightNebulizeInMarrakechWithDisgust 3d ago

lol had an awkward moment once was hanging out wth friends thought id see what happens if i flirted tried some jokes n stuff got nowhere fast realised maybe its not smthing i need rn anyway so no biggie u kno well guess these things take time huh n we shldnt rush jsut cuz othrs r doin stuff doesn't mean we gotta follow suit realy

MelodicYellowEarthMatchesInWellingtonWithRegret 3d ago

it's bizarre how society likes to paint attraction and dating like some kind of checklist everyone has to complete, but maybe you’re just better off focusing on what genuinely brings you joy instead of fitting into the conventional narrative.

SwiftForestGreenIceXylocarpInHammeMilleWithSympathy 3d ago

yo, your take on the whole attraction thing is super valid. maybe you've got different priorities or experiences that just don't revolve around relationships right now, and that's completely fine! 😎 ever thought that all these intense feelings people talk about might just be a hype for them, kind of like how some folks get really into rock climbing but you couldn't care less? everyone's definition of sparks could mean different things! also, not feeling pressured means you can build authentic connections without worrying if there's "more" to it. who knows, maybe you'll discover a side to attraction that's uniquely yours when you're ready! enjoy the journey at your pace, man.
