Embarrassed by family
The story
so I went to this family reunion and it was supposed to be chill, right? but then my parents decided it was story time!!! like seriously, who needs to know about the time i peed my pants in kindergarten?! i'm sitting there dying and my partner's right next to me trying not to laugh (or maybe die from awkardness). this was their first time meeting my family and instead of normal convos or whatever, we get a rundown of every dumb thing i've done since i was born. 😑
after the third embarrassing tale (they just wouldn't stop), i couldn't even look at anyone. everyone around seemed entertained while i'm just wishing for a miracle escape route. they talked about that stupid incident when i mistook the neighbor's cat for our own...like okay yeah that happened but why now??? all this in front of people i've never met before!!!
and then comes the cherry on top: grandma chimes in with something about my weird teenage goth phase even though i'd rather forget that ever happened 🤦♂️ trying so hard not to lose it completely as they think they're being funny or cute or whatever!!! and of course nobody asks if it's cool with me.
honestly left the reunion feeling humiliated AF! i get family reunions are about sharing memories and stuff but can there be a limit please???? some stories are MEANT to stay dead and buried forever!! 🙄 how is it fair for them to air out everything without warning?? wasn't fun for me AT ALL.

Have you thought about talking to your parents about setting boundaries?
Setting boundaries could help avoid future awkward moments.
might give that a try next time... thanks!
Man, that sounds like a tough spot to be in. Families can just be oblivious sometimes, thinking they're being nostalgic while you're cringing every second. I guess everyone’s got their embarrassing story vault that they’d rather keep locked up; does your family always pull this kind of thing or was this an unexpected turn? Hoping your partner didn’t judge too harshly, lol.
Yo, that sounds brutal! I remember something like that at my cousin's wedding. My mom spilled the tea on how I used to have an imaginary dragon named Fredrick and would make everyone address him respectfully in public. 😂 That awkward laughter while you want the earth to swallow you whole is real! Families sometimes just don't get that it's not as funny now as they think it is... More like a cringe factory!
Wow, that sounds super rough!!! 😅 Maybe they thought it was like a rite of passage or something? I’m all for sharing memories but there should definitely be some kind of mutual consent involved in airing personal stories... especially ones from kindergarten lol. It's kinda weird how family just assumes it's okay to spill every embarrassing detail without considering how it affects you today. Honestly, I've been at reunions where people end up unloading things better left hidden too! It's almost as if parents get some sort of twisted kick outta revisiting those cringe-worthy tales. Just a thought: maybe next time bring up funny stories about them to even the playing field; see how they feel when the tables are turned! 🤔
Oh man, I can totally relate; my relatives have a knack for doing the same stuff, lol. They think they're bonding while you're just praying for an alien abduction or something! 😉 How did your partner react afterward? It must have been awkward with them there witnessing that barrage of embarrassing tales!!! The reunion probably felt like one long cringe marathon and trust me, once they start on their storytelling track, they rarely stop... there's got to be some way to steer the conversation next time though!
kinda sucks lmao
ugh, totally feel you on that one. family reunions can turn into the ultimate cringefest if folks don't know when to leave certain stories in the past. maybe it's their way of bonding or thinking they're being endearing, but yeah, not everyone wants their awkward crash course biography laid out like a comedy special! i get sharing memories is part of these gatherings, but damn, it'd be nice if they could read the room (or at least give a little heads up). hope your partner wasn't too fazed; it’d probably make for a good private laugh between you two later though. keep those chin-up moments ready for next time!
Family can sometimes treat personal history like a public archive that everyone’s entitled to...what was probably meant as light-hearted fun spirals into mortifying humiliation, and it’s baffling how they don’t perceive the discomfort!
idk fam events r always like this ya know its kind chalked up to 'family bonding' ig... sometimes ppl just dont get whats ok n whats not
family games thru embarrassing tales lol typical!
'bonding' has limits tho right?? like cmon!
