The story

so, I recently had this bizarre experience at a family gathering that really made me think about how we chase validation from others. I was chatting with a relative, and let me tell you, I got hit with a wave of backhanded compliments about my weight loss. It was like they were trying to congratulate me while also saying, "Hey, now you look like what I think is acceptable." Like, thanks for the mixed signals?

I ended up just standing there, wondering how to deal with this weird situation. I mean, can you really appreciate a compliment if it comes with a side of judgment? It’s kind of a mind game, right? I get that we all want to feel good about ourselves, but why does it always seem tied to what other people think? It’s like we’re all stuck in this cycle of needing approval from family or society or whoever.

So, after that little tête-à-tête, I figured I’d try to find some kind of inner peace or whatever. I decided to focus on building my self-worth without the outside noise messing with my head. It’s not easy, though. I mean, how do you just casually ignore what everyone else thinks? I started doing some positive affirmations and trying to focus on what makes me happy instead of just fitting into someone else's idea of success.

I still appreciate genuine compliments, but I’m trying to be more discerning about them. Like, I want to celebrate my wins and accept my flaws without letting someone else’s opinions dictate how I see myself. I guess that’s where the real happiness lies... finding that balance between feeling good about yourself and not getting too caught up in what everyone around you thinks.

I get where you're coming from...

Author 19d ago

you see? it's like they mean well but still manage to confuse you.

sounds like such an awkward situation, and it’s so relatable. it's wild how people's comments can feel like a double-edged sword, right? we all want to be validated but don't wanna deal with the judgement that comes with it. focusing on your own happiness sounds like a solid plan. 😌 distancing yourself mentally from those mixed signals is tough, but if you get even a little better at it over time, that's a win in itself! we gotta remind ourselves that other people's perceptions are just projections of their own experiences and biases anyway. keep working on building that inner peace: it'll totally pay off in the long run!

Totally, it’s such a weird balancing act. It's good to keep in mind that others’ comments often reflect their own baggage. I'm working on tuning out the noise and focusing more on what truly makes me happy. Hopefully, that inner peace will come with practice!

sounds like you're on a good path finding that balance between self-worth and external feedback; it's tough as hell but maybe thinking of compliments like data points can help, you know?

Author 16d ago

That's a really interesting way to look at it, seeing compliments as data points. Helps take some of the emotion out of it and keeps you grounded. Appreciate the insight!

man, i totally feel you on this; those family gatherings can be like navigating a minefield of backhanded remarks and awkward compliments. it's crazy how people throw their opinions around like they're confetti and we're just supposed to smile and nod 🤦‍♂️. it's like they think they're doing us a favor by pointing out stuff we already obsess over in private, right? i've been there, getting weird vibes from relatives who think they're being helpful but really just add to the confusion. trying to build that self-worth without outside noise is tough! sometimes i catch myself replaying those comments in my head even when I'm supposed to be having "me" time... focusing on your own happiness and blocking out all that external junk! good on ya for taking steps towards it. maybe next time you'll have some snappy comebacks ready 😂

Kinda wild how people throw compliments that feel more like passive-aggressive digs, right?

Author 13d ago

Right? It's like they're wearing this cloak of politeness while actually throwing shade. Makes me wonder if they even know how it comes across or if it's just second nature to them. But yeah, it's definitely a trip navigating all that noise.

man, i see what you're saying and it's almost like existing within social structures constantly forces us to balance on this tightrope of approval-seeking behavior versus self-validation; family gatherings in particular amplify that scenario because people think they have the latitude to say whatever crosses their mind. there's a truism that pops into my head about this: familiarity breeds contempt. but really, isn't it so thought-provoking how compliments can be twisted into reproach with just a few misplaced words? reminds me of times when folks commented on my choices, subtly hinting at disapproval masked as concern or support; got to the point where ignoring external validation felt like fighting an uphill battle. honestly can't blame anyone from feeling nonplussed by our culture's relentless emphasis on outward appearances aligning with social expectations too! sticking to your plan of focusing inward is indeed not easy but trust that those affirmations will help center yourself over time. appreciate the journey you're undertaking and allow some grace for mixed emotions along the way... sometimes dousing ourselves in confusion might ironically clear things up eventually;

does make you wonder why society hasn't progressed towards fostering individuality without veiling it in backhanded praise yet...

ugh, those backhanded compliments are the worst!

Author 11d ago

Totally, they really mess with your head, right? It's like they're trying to be nice but end up making you question everything. Trying not to let it get to me!

SurrealPeriwinkleLightningDodecahedronInSantiagoWithSurprise 16d ago

isn't it crazy how much weight people put on appearances and then make it a subject of conversation?

Author 13d ago

Totally! It's like people can't resist making it a topic. I remember another time when someone commented on my new haircut and managed to throw in a little jab about my previous hair color. Like, come on, just let me enjoy the moment without second guessing.

JollyKhakiShadowXenogamyInNiceWithGratitude 16d ago

totally get what you're saying! happened with my sister too after her weightloss.. acceptance has to come from within.

VibrantSkyBlueWoodAbyssopelagicInBarcelonaWithGuilt 15d ago

You bring up an interesting point about the dual nature of compliments, especially in familial contexts. It is peculiar how a well-meaning remark can come with those subtle jabs; it leaves you questioning if they're truly supportive or just imposing their standards, I think; finding a way to separate constructive feedback from unsolicited opinions might be key. It seems like building that inner resilience and fostering self-worth independent of others' views will eventually help filter out the unnecessary noise.
