i am boring
The story
Last Friday, I was at Kelsey's apartment with my usual group, eating cold ranch dip and waiting for somebody to call a ride. Around 11:40, Kelsey pulled out a stack of index cards with party prompts on them. The sentence in my head after my turn was plain: i am boring. I already knew I was quiet, but I did not know my friends had so little to say about me.
The prompt asked everyone to share a memorable story about the person whose name was picked. Erin got the story about breaking a karaoke microphone. Devin got the airport story where his suitcase circled the baggage claim with somebody else's bright pink scarf tied to it. People were laughing before the stories even finished. Then Kelsey read my name, smiled, and looked around the room.
Nobody said anything. Mina stared into her cup. Devin rubbed ranch dust off his jeans. Kelsey tapped my card against her knee and finally said, "Come on, there has to be something." After another awful pause, Mina laughed and said, "You're just chill." Kelsey moved to the next card, and everybody looked relieved. I laughed too, because making the pause into a joke was easier than sitting inside it;
The annoying part is that my routines genuinely make me happy. I cook the same tomato pasta most Sunday nights. I take my laundry to the place beside the drugstore and read while the dryers shake. When our group picks a movie, I enjoy finding something everyone will actually watch. I dont secretly wish those evenings were wild. A clean kitchen, folded shirts, and a decent movie feel pretty good to me.
Still, I keep thinking about that blank room. These friends invite me out, remember my coffee order, and hand me their coats at crowded bars. Apparently, though, I am useful background furniture. I am present in everybody else's funny stories without becoming part of the story. It makes me wonder whether I need to book a kayaking lesson, start arguments, or say yes to noisy places I hate just so people can describe me later.
Mina texted after the party to ask whether I got home safely. She also sent a blurry photo of Devin with ranch dip on his sleeve, which did make me laugh. They are not mean people, and I do believe they care about me. Maybe the game was just built for loud memories. But it still kinda sucks that nobody could mention a single quiet thing, even the time I stayed late helping Kelsey choose furniture for that weird empty corner.
I am tired of wondering whether being comfortable has made me invisible. I could bring up the silence with Mina, but asking a friend to prove I am memorable feels humiliating. I also do not want to fake some louder version of myself and become exhausting. Should I accept that i am boring and hope these friendships still have room for me, or should I make myself more interesting on purpose?
