Why does she hate me?

The story

I'm just really confused and hurt right now. So, I overheard my best friend talking smack about me to someone else. Like, what the heck? We were always so tight, or at least that's what I thought. It wasn't even like she was venting about something small; she went on about how I'm always late, never listen, and don't care about her feelings. I mean, seriously? I've always tried to be there for her when she needs. Now I'm questioning everything: have I been blind to all this or did something happen that I'm missing?

I keep replaying it in my mind because maybe I misunderstood. But honestly, she didn't even sound upset like if she needed a shoulder; she sounded like she's done with me. Now I'm here thinking if there's some truth in what she said or if there’s another reason behind those words. Do you ever think you know someone so well only to find out that they may not be the person you believed them to be? It's weird because we've been through so much together.

I guess what bothers me most is why didn’t she talk to me directly if something was wrong? We're supposed to be closer than this sneaking around crap. It's making me doubt the foundation of our friendship which sucks big time since she's been such an important part of my life until now; and should I confront her about it? What if it's just a giant misunderstanding and then confronting makes things awkward? Or worse: what if it's not a misunderstanding at all and I've been naive? Feels crappy when you start doubting yourself over stuff like this.

well, sounds like a whole mess right there. you know, friendships can be fickle sometimes and maybe she just needed to vent at that moment or she's frustrated. but here's the catch: if she can't have a direct convo with you about issues, that's on her, not you. and yeah, sure, maybe there's some truth in what she said but it's messed up for her to trash-talk rather than communicate directly. confrontation might clear things up...unless it turns into drama central which nobody wants. don't beat yourself up too much though; people are weird and unpredictable!

yo i get u same thing happened w/ my buddy last year

Author 19d ago

Ugh, so frustrating, right? It's like friendship whiplash. How did you even deal with that?

AwesomeVioletLightningSpongeInBogotaWithFear 19d ago

i feel for you but do you know why she might say that stuff without telling you first? sometimes ppl get real odd under pressure but it doesn't excuse betrayal for sure! i remember when my cousin talked behind my back but turned out he was going through stuff himself.

man, it sucks when stuff like this hits you out of nowhere. listening to someone you trust just trash you can be a real gut punch. sure, maybe there's some truth to what she said, but talking behind your back is so not cool if you're as close as you think. i had something similar happen once, and yeah, it’s tough to decide whether to confront or let it slide. from my experience though, sitting on it only makes things worse in your head. maybe feel it out with a few probing questions and see where she's at before going all in? either way it's gonna be awkward but staying silent feels even crappier long term... been there!

wow, that sounds like a real mess; but honestly, isn't it classic how communication breaks down because people just can't say what's on their mind directly?

Author 16d ago

Right? It's like, why can't people just be upfront? Maybe I'm overthinking this, but if she felt that way, shouldn't it have been a conversation between us? Ugh, it's so frustrating.

hearing such hurtful words from a close friend feels like betrayal, but perhaps this situation is a prime opportunity for self-reflection as well as understanding their perspective.

WhimsicalSkyBlueIceBottleOpenerInBeijingWithDespair 18d ago

maybe shes just ventin n not really hate u idk its weirdd just ask her lol

JazzyWhiteFireUrsineInCopenhagenWithLove 18d ago

man, that's rough. hearing those words from someone you trust can really sting, right? here's a thought though: maybe it's not so black and white. sometimes folks need to process their own feelings before they know how to bring it up, even if it means gossiping in the meantime (which sucks!). i've heard that kind of friendship tension described almost like a system glitch, where communication breaks down somewhere along the line... happens to the best of friendships. but hey, confronting could go either way! maybe you'll both see eye-to-eye or maybe it'll be awkward for a bit and then smooth out eventually. also worth wondering if other's opinions about y'all's relationship influenced her ranting?? definitely throws a wrench in things when you find yourself re-evaluating the whole dynamic!

JubilantCharcoalLightLimerickInAbuDhabiWithAnger 18d ago

Why don't you ask her directly?

VibrantBeigeWoodTelevisionInBrasiliaWithJealousy 18d ago

geez, that sucks real bad. maybe there's something going on in her life that's making her lash out like this? sometimes people project their own issues onto others without even realizing it. you ever notice if she's been stressed or acting different lately, like more distant or something? might be a clue to what's happening. just remember that even though confrontation feels tough, it could clear the air and help you figure things out with her... if that's what you wanna do!

EnigmaticBrownFireSmartphoneInAmsterdamWithShame 17d ago

yo, sounds like a trash situation but have you ever thought maybe she's projecting her own issues onto you?

Author 12d ago

That actually crossed my mind, like maybe she's got her own stuff going on and taking it out on me. Still makes it tough to hear though, y'know?

FrozenEmeraldLightningTieInHammeMilleWithCuriosity 17d ago

Sounds frustrating but...

SizzlingIndigoWaterHeaterInVancouverWithEmbarrassment 17d ago

you know, it's strange how someone so close can suddenly feel like a stranger after something like this.

JazzyRedIceControllerInLisbonWithShame 15d ago

one time i had a friend who did the same thing and it knocked me off balance; turned out she'd been holding in stuff for ages 'cause she assumed i'd get defensive.

EnigmaticMagentaFireYurtInZurichWithAffection 15d ago

mm sounds familiar tho sometmes people do that when theyre stressed u kno like once my bro lashed out at me cuz of his work stress

CosmicBrownEarthRhodomontadeInKualaLumpurWithJoy 14d ago

It feels awful when someone close betrays your trust by talking negatively behind your back but maybe there's context you're unaware of here? While it does seem concerning that she'd choose not to approach you directly it might help understanding where she's coming from before reacting strongly.

Author 14d ago

You're right. Maybe there is context I don't know, but it still hurts so much. I thought we had the kind of friendship where we could be honest with each other, not this whisper-behind-back stuff. Why not just talk to me?
