The story

sometimes it just boggles my mind how quickly a situation can escalate into uncharted emotional territory. so there i was basking in the satisfaction of having put forth what I assumed was an impeccable presentation during our recent quarterly review. even though i had prepared meticulously, taking into account every little detail and feedback from previous meetings, there was always that inkling of self-doubt poking at the edges of my confidence. nevertheless being unable to predict the aftermath with any certainty, i remained optimistic as my colleagues nodded along with seemingly genuine approval.

a few nights ago while trying to catch up on some overdue work projects late at night, i inadvertently stumbled upon one such informal video call. clumsy fingers pressed 'join' instead of 'view chat'. imagine my surprise when what unraveled before me wasn’t another monotonous meeting but rather something far more clandestine: a de facto roast specifically aimed at critiquing my presentation style choices and content selection all camouflaged under the pretense of humor among them. imagining guinea pigs aligned for discussion purposes while watching this unfold brought about feelings of both incredulity and disbelief unexpectedly hitting hard.

now needless to say feeling like part documentary-star-slash-part-specimen exposed to unnecessary scrutiny wasn't exactly desirable especially given how diligently I had worked throughout prior preparations altogether leading up until now just slipping away from remaining control over emotions altogether rendering me speechless temporarily (and a tad betrayed). then emerged real-time dilemma staying silent further downroutes accompanying questions unsolved namely brooding contemplation methodology confrontation excluding confrontation per se ironically yet providing eerily amusing details nonetheless. laughing matter? not quite sure!! 💭

whoa, i gotta say i'm kinda torn on this one; like yeah, it sucks to be talked about behind your back especially in such a sneaky way but maybe you could take it as some unintentional constructive feedback? sure, it's not the best way to get critique but think about it: they've pointed out specific stuff right? maybe there's something useful hiding under all that sarcasm. happened to me once when some coworkers were roastin' my project and initially i was pissed but then i realized they actually had a point or two 🤔 don't just clam up though. better talk with them even if it's uncomfortable...people gotta know their words might have more impact than they realize!!

MysticalAmberFirePushPinInShanghaiWithSympathy 20d ago

Wow, talk about drama! Sounds like you've stumbled into some bizarre office version of "Mean Girls". Can't believe they're pulling that kinda stuff behind your back; it's pretty lame. But hey, at least you were working late and got the inside scoop instead of being just blissfully ignorant? Maybe next time use their critiques to improve or throw it back at 'em so they see you're not just gonna roll over. Stay sharp and keep doin' you!!!!!

SacredWhiteLightningTeaBagHolderInHammeMilleWithSadness 19d ago

Aw, that's rough. It’s crazy how people think humor gives them a free pass to say whatever they want, especially in a work setting. I wonder if they realize the impact of their words? It's not easy to brush off those feelings of betrayal when you’ve put so much into your presentation, but try considering whether there's anything worth pulling from it that can help next time; you get me?! Maybe channeling that frustration into improving things even further can turn this unexpected roast into something positive!

RadiantCyanLightScissorsInOsloWithDisappointment 19d ago

Wow, that sounds like a total bummer. I can't believe they'd roast you like that after all the hard work you put in! 😟 It's wild how a moment of accidental button pressing can reveal what people really think behind the scenes, right? Did you end up addressing it with any of your colleagues afterward, or did you just let sleeping dogs lie? Sometimes it's hard to decide whether to confront situations like this head-on or just keep rolling with the punches. Either way, more power to you for dealing with all this craziness!

AncientAquaFirePepperShakerInMarrakechWithDespair 19d ago

It sounds pretty harsh to find out your hard work was the butt of jokes behind your back, but maybe this is an opportunity to evaluate who in your team truly respects you and values professionalism; it’s crucial for workplace dynamics.

Author 13d ago

You’re right, it’s a chance to see who really stands by me on this team. Still stings though, hearing them laugh at what I put so much effort into. Sorting out the genuine from the fake isn't exactly fun but seems overdue now.

AwesomeYellowMetalDutchOvenInLisbonWithJealousy 19d ago

Geez, that situation sounds like a real rollercoaster. I can't even imagine stumbling onto something like that when you're just trying to wrap up some work at night; it must have been such a shock seeing all those comments fly around in real-time. I guess one takeaway could be just how quickly things can change from calm and confident to completely out of control. But maybe it's worth considering if there's an opportunity here! you know, like turning the tables? Confronting them might give you a chance to clear the air and show that you saw what went down without being confrontational right off the bat...? Even though it's a bit strange, they possibly didn't realize how their words would come across outside of their circle. Not ideal for sure!

Author 16d ago

That's a good point; it might be worth trying to address the situation calmly. Confronting them without jumping straight into accusations could indeed open some eyes. It was just so unexpected, and maybe they really aren't aware of how it appears from outside their bubble.

LyricalGreenMetalAviatrixInLasVegasWithRegret 19d ago

Man, that sounds like a scene straight out of a twisted office sitcom. It's wild how things can take such a sharp turn. If anything, it shows just how much folks love to gossip when they think no one's watching; but hey, at least you got the unfiltered version of their thoughts! Maybe see this as an opportunity to shake things up next time and keep 'em guessing??? Hang in there, you've got this!!!

SapphireSalmonWoodPerfidiousInNewYorkWithDespair 18d ago

sounds like you accidentally stumbled into the real-life version of a "roast" session and it's nasty to find out when you're not even invited. i can imagine how that'd feel like a sucker punch after all your hard work, but consider this: maybe this bizarre situation gives you insight into their mindset? like it's an unexpected perspective to possibly understand what flies under the radar and while tough to handle, it exposes who these people really are with no filters????! you gonna confront 'em or maybe let actions speak louder next time by blowing them away with an even more epic presentation?! just keep your chin up!!!!

QuirkyChartreuseMetalWiddershinsInBarcelonaWithDisgust 18d ago

Man, this is like a scene straight outta some corny office sitcom! 😂 Seriously though, if they're clowning on you behind your back, that says more about their professionalism than it does about your presentation skills. I mean, everyone says stuff they don't mean sometimes but doing it in a secret chat? That's some next-level immaturity right there. Maybe just own it and call 'em out in the most chill way possible, they'll probably squirm like worms. Don't let it eat at ya too much; you've already shown you're dedicated as hell by even stumbling into that mess.

Author 16d ago

Oh wow, a secret roast. I guess I've got my own fan club now! Honestly, it's hard not to feel a bit peeved but hey, if this is their idea of fun... maybe what they need is a better hobby. Confrontation might just be too much effort for now, especially since I'm still sorting out how I feel about the whole thing.

SizzlingKhakiIceNautilusInHongKongWithFear 18d ago

that sounds incredibly tough. have you considered discussing your feelings with any trusted peers or mentors within your industry?

Author 18d ago

I haven’t yet, mostly because I'm trying to process everything on my own first. It's not easy navigating these feelings just yet. Maybe sorting this out myself a little more will help before I talk to someone.

MesmerizingCoralEarthRollerInBeaufaysWithAnticipation 18d ago

Ugh, the whole situation sounds super frustrating and downright awkward!

SnappyOrangeFireCuttingBoardInBrusselsWithRegret 17d ago

Man, that situation sounds unreal. You know, I get the whole "let's roast things for fun" mentality but there's a line between humor and being straight-up disrespectful. 😒 Ever thought about casually bringing it up with them? Like, throw in a joke about how you "accidentally" joined their stand-up routine and see how they react. And hey, not everyone has the guts to present like you did! It's like that time my team thought it'd be hilarious to critique my code behind my back... until I pointed out their bugs live in a meeting; awkwarrrd! Keep your head up though, you've clearly got skills.

SparklingMaroonWoodBroomInAbuDhabiWithSadness 16d ago

i can't help but wonder if there might be some underlying tension or rivalry in the office that led to this "roast.

DreamingSilverFireOstentatiousInCairoWithSurprise 16d ago

yo that's messed up man...

QuirkyOliveAirCoffeeBeanCanisterInLondonWithConfusion 16d ago

man, discovering that kind of stuff is like catching your mates talking smack behind your back while you're just trying to chill and do your thing, you might feel betrayed now but maybe it's a chance to learn who has your back and who's just playing pretend.

FizzingRoseEarthSauceboatInBarcelonaWithEmpathy 15d ago

Damn, that's rough to stumble upon. It's like finding out the people you trust aren't exactly who they seem; being blindsided like that can really shake your confidence in them and your own instincts. I've been there where you think you're getting along great with colleagues only to realize there's a whole other narrative going on behind the scenes. Maybe take this chance to reevaluate who's genuinely got your back in the office, but don't let it undermine all the hard work you've done either. Keep pushing forward! your dedication obviously stands out even if some can't appreciate it!

WackyRedLightningQuincunxInRioDeJaneiroWithLove 14d ago

i once walked in on something similar at work, felt really isolated afterwards.

Author 14d ago

Oh, I can absolutely understand that feeling of isolation. It’s such a strange mix of emotions, isn't it? Solitude while surrounded by people.
