Overthinking in a relationship
The story
ever been to a dinner party where you're just mentally stuck on something and can't snap out of it? picture this: we’re chilling at our friend’s place, the vibe is great, music's playing softly in the background, and everyone seems to be getting along. my partner’s usually chatty, you know. but tonight, every time my coworker chimes in, they go all quiet like someone hit the mute button. cool story, right? now i’m here double-checking everything they're saying – maybe triple-checking. yeah, i know it sounds nuts but here we are.
so there i am doing the classic overthinker shuffle (the one where you keep spotting imaginary issues). suddenly their silence feels deafening! oh joy 🙄. let’s call this “situation” a symphony of awkwardness with yours truly as conductor. it’s amusing how fast your mind can flip from ‘i got this’ mode to ‘something must be wrong’. while others were laughing around us about some inside joke referencing an old tv show (which i missed entirely), i'm dissecting micro-expressions like i'm on CSI or something; it's exhausting really. tried not letting that nagging little voice in my ear run wild – but you know how successful that went.
maybe i should focus less on reading between lines and more on trusting what's in front of me? easier said than done, though when anxiety decides to crash your evening uninvited.
had anyone experienced similar situations at gatherings? moments where things seem fine yet internally there's a whole debate unfolding with different voices chiming in like it’s some kind of awkward panel discussion happening within your head?
